Exporting in 2026

## The Work Is Bigger Than It Used to Be

Exporting in 2026 is harder than it was five years ago: shifting tariff regimes, wider export controls, transaction-level sanctions screening, CBAM reporting on EU-bound goods, and more volatile logistics. Most of this work sits upstream of the first shipment, and most founders underestimate it. Our job is to sequence it so the first move lands cleanly, and the second is easier.

What We Do

## Six Sequenced Steps, Scoped to Your Operation

Every engagement moves through the same six steps. We scope the depth of each step to your business: a founder-led manufacturer needs a different Readiness Assessment from a PE portfolio company with existing international customers. The sequence does not change; the intensity does.

### Readiness assessment

We establish whether your product and operation are export-ready at all: cost base, product spec, supply continuity, team capacity, IP position, regulatory baseline. No point building a plan on an unready base, and if that is where you are, we would rather tell you at week one than month three.

### Market prioritisation

We sequence candidate markets by accessibility, opportunity and risk, weighted against your product, commercial model and operational reach. Not every good market is a good first market. We rank, justify, and recommend where to start.

### Compliance mapping

Export controls, tariffs, sanctions exposure, product labelling, certification and conformity, CBAM scope if EU-bound, and local regulatory requirements per priority market. We map the compliance load, flag where specialist counsel is needed, and identify what must be solved before the first shipment.

### Commercial model

Pricing across target markets (landed-cost modelling, not just list-price translation), Incoterms selection, payment terms, credit management and insurance. This is where most first-time exporters lose money quietly; we make the trade-offs explicit.

### Route to market

Direct, distributor, agent, digital, or a hybrid. We recommend the route that fits the product, margin, customer and your capacity, and we are clear about where each pays off and where it does not. Where the answer is "distributor", this is often the handoff into our Distributor Identification service.

### Execution plan

A sequenced six-to-twelve-month plan with milestones, named owners, and a scoped first move. A working document your board can commit to, not a slide deck that sits on a shelf. Where onward support is useful, we scope it separately.

What a Shortlist Profile Contains

## Deliverables From a Typical Engagement

Every deliverable is built to be used: the plan is a working document, the compliance map a living reference, the pricing work a model your finance team can run themselves.

A typical Export Preparation engagement produces:

- Readiness memo with a green / amber / red assessment and the specific gaps, if any

- Prioritised market list with rationale: ranked by accessibility, opportunity and risk

- Compliance and regulatory map per priority market (controls, tariffs, sanctions, labelling, CBAM)

- Pricing and Incoterms recommendation, with landed-cost modelling on priority markets

- Payment terms, credit management and insurance recommendation

- Route-to-market recommendation, with triggers for moving to distributor work if relevant

- Sequenced execution plan with milestones, owners and a scoped first move

Who This Is For

## Three Situations We See Most Often

(1)

First-time exporters

You haven't shipped internationally yet and you want to do it once, properly. You have decided exporting is part of the plan; what you do not yet have is the sequenced map from decision to first shipment.

(2)

Underpowered export programmes

You have made one or two international sales but there is no plan behind them, typically inbound enquiries you serviced reactively. You want to professionalise before the next one lands, so growth is deliberate rather than accidental.

(3)

Pivoting businesses

You are diversifying away from a single domestic market or a concentrated customer base, and exporting is part of the response. Owner-managed manufacturers, PE portfolio companies and mid-market corporates making their first meaningful international move.

General

Process

Support

##### What is export preparation?

Export preparation helps companies assess whether they are ready to enter overseas markets and what practical steps are needed before active international business development begins.

##### Who is this service for?

It is suitable for first-time exporters, companies entering more complex markets, firms launching new products internationally, and businesses reviewing why previous export efforts have underperformed.

##### Is export preparation the same as market research?

No. Market research assesses external opportunity. Export preparation assesses whether the company itself is ready to pursue that opportunity effectively.

##### Which markets do you cover?

72 markets across five continents. Market prioritisation is part of the service, we will not simply agree with the list you arrive with. Part of what you are paying us for is a defensible answer to “where first?”.

##### Can this be done before we invest in overseas travel?

Yes. A preparation review can help avoid wasted travel by clarifying the market, proposition, target contacts and materials before in-market activity begins.

##### What areas do you assess?

We may review product readiness, pricing, capacity, compliance, documentation, logistics, marketing materials, sales process, after-sales support, internal resource and target-market suitability.

##### What does an export preparation project produce?

Outputs may include an export readiness assessment, gap analysis, priority action list, target-market considerations and a staged export action plan.

##### What if we're not export-ready?

We will say so at the Readiness step, with the specific gaps identified: cost base, product spec, supply, team, regulatory baseline, IP. We will recommend the upstream work and, where useful, pause the engagement until it is done. A plan built on an unready base is expensive theatre.

##### Can you review our marketing materials?

Yes. We can review whether your materials are suitable for international buyers, distributors or partners, and identify gaps in positioning, language, evidence or technical information.

##### Can you help with CBAM reporting?

We scope the compliance load and flag CBAM exposure on EU-bound goods, so you know what reporting obligations apply and when. Detailed quarterly CBAM reporting is a specialist workstream we introduce. It is not something we run in-house.

##### Can you continue to support us after the plan is delivered?

Yes, retainer or project-based, your choice. First-shipment coordination, quarterly reviews, or a clean handoff into Distributor Identification if that is the route you chose. Onward support is optional, not a condition.

##### Do you work with trade bodies or export agencies?

Yes. Copernicus has experience supporting chambers, trade organisations and government-linked bodies with international business development and B2B activity.

##### Can you help with translations?

Yes, where relevant. Translation and localisation support can be arranged, particularly where language affects market entry, distributor engagement or regulatory requirements.

##### Do you sell or refer to specific banks and freight forwarders?

We introduce based on client fit: the right forwarder for a palletised B2B shipment to Germany is not the right one for temperature-controlled airfreight into the Gulf. We do not take referral fees. Our incentive is a working shipment, not a commission.

##### Do you run this as a subsidised or grant-funded programme?

No. We are fee-for-service and independent. If there is a live grant-funded scheme in your market that supports export preparation (UK, devolved, or in a target market) we will flag it, but we do not depend on one.
