International growth has changed

## Plan for trade, sanctions and supply-chain pressures

International growth today is a very different proposition to five years ago. Tariff regimes shift with each election cycle. Sanctions coverage has widened (Russia-related, dual-use technology, Iran), layered on top of long-standing regimes.

Supply-chain reshoring and near-shoring have moved from boardroom slide to operational reality. ESG and carbon-border disclosure add a new regulatory load on top of the existing one. The US–China axis forces every globally-minded business to think about footprint concentration.

*The businesses that grow through this environment share a common trait: they bring local intelligence to every decision, and they are disciplined about scoping what they take on. That is what we help with.*

What this means for planning

## The six frictions now shaping international briefs

### Tariff and trade-policy volatility

Landed cost assumptions that held for years no longer hold for a planning cycle. Route-to-market economics need to be re-tested against moving duties, and sourcing decisions made with an eye on the next policy shift.

### Sanctions and export-control complexity

Russia-related and dual-use controls sit on top of long-standing regimes. Counterparty screening is no longer a back-office tick-box. It has to run at shortlist stage, before a commercial conversation starts.

### Reshoring and supply-chain resilience

The conversation has shifted from pure cost-optimisation to diversified footprint and defensible redundancy. That reshapes what a "good" market entry or distributor looks like.

### ESG, CBAM and reporting load

Carbon-border adjustment, supply-chain due-diligence obligations and local ESG reporting add a layer that wasn't there five years ago. Target markets need to be assessed on compliance load as well as opportunity.

### Local-content and substance rules

Several jurisdictions now require real in-country substance, beneficial-ownership disclosure, or local-content thresholds. These shape entity structure and timing, not just paperwork.

### Political-risk concentration

Single-market or single-partner exposure reads differently now than it did in 2019. Many clients come to us because one concentration has become a board-level risk to diversify against.

(2)

Expanding your footprint

##### What does distributor identification involve?

Distributor identification involves defining the ideal partner profile, researching the distributor landscape, identifying relevant candidates, screening them and producing a prioritised shortlist.

##### What types of partners can you identify?

Depending on the market and product, we may identify distributors, agents, importers, resellers, channel partners, franchise partners, joint-venture candidates or specialist local representatives.

##### Do you guarantee that we will appoint a distributor?

No. We identify and engage relevant candidates, but appointment depends on the client’s proposition, pricing, terms, market demand and distributor appetite.

##### Can you work in markets where we do not speak the local language?

Yes. Local language capability is one of the reasons clients use Copernicus. Local consultants can help with research, communication and interpretation.

##### How do you define the ideal distributor profile?

We work with the client to agree target sectors, customer base, geographic coverage, product compatibility, technical capability, sales infrastructure, current brand portfolio and commercial expectations.

##### Do you contact potential distributors?

Where agreed, yes. We can contact potential distributors to test interest, gather feedback and establish whether there may be a basis for further discussion.

##### How do you assess whether a distributor is suitable?

We look at market reach, reputation, customer access, product fit, existing supplier portfolio, competing lines, technical capability, responsiveness, financial credibility where available and apparent strategic interest.

##### What do we receive at the end of the project?

Typical outputs include a distributor landscape review, candidate profiles, contact details where available, screening notes, prioritised shortlist and recommended next steps.

##### Can you help with distributor meetings?

Yes. We can help arrange meetings, prepare briefing notes, support discussion agendas and provide local market context.

##### Can you help replace an underperforming distributor?

Yes. Distributor replacement projects can assess the current channel, identify alternative partners and support a more structured selection process.

##### Can distributor search be combined with market research?

Yes. In many cases, a distributor search is more effective when preceded by market research to understand demand, competition, channels and realistic entry routes.

##### Can you support negotiations with distributors?

We can support preparation, local context, follow-up and negotiation guidance. Final commercial negotiation and legal agreement remain the client’s responsibility.
